8 Reasons Why Miles Morales Shouldn't Be The Movie Spider-Man Yet

3. Morales Isn't Well Known Enough Yet

When Warner Bros. announced that Ryan Reynolds was cast as the lead in the ill-fated Green Lantern movie, a significant amount of casual superhero fans were shocked that a Caucasian actor was cast. Green Lantern John Stewart, who is African American, became so popular via the cartoon series Justice League Unlimited (plus the series' associated merchandise) that these fans didn't even know that the previous versions of the character were Caucasian. Stewart had become a famous character in his own right. Morales' comic has been a solid seller so far. However, his other media appearances are limited to just two episodes of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon (voiced by actor Donald Glover, whose desire to play Spider-Man in a movie partially inspired the character's creation) and being a playable character in several video games. To the general public, Morales is virtually unknown. That puts the character at a tremendous disadvantage because thousands of moviegoers only know Spider-Man as he has existed for the last fifty-plus years. General audiences would likely react to a non-Peter Parker Spider-Man as "Who's that?" or, even worse, "Why did they change him?" Sony/Marvel using a character with little name recognition to replace a far more popular original version of the character would set the movie up for failure. It would be a shame if audiences did not give Morales a chance because they simply don't know enough about him yet, and a poor box office showing for a Morales-starring Spider-Man movie would hurt the character tremendously.
