8 Reasons Why Sony's Venom Movie Has Us Worried

6. The Long-Gestating History

Ever since forcing the character into Raimi's Spider-Man 3 in 2007, Sony has been working tirelessly to give this a character a solo film. Part of it stemmed from a desire to right the wrongs in regards to the poor reception of the character's on-screen portrayal in Spider-Man 3. But way more of it had to do with the fact that Sony thought that more Venom meant more loads of money.

Despite their eagerness to get the project going and several near-starts, Sony could never quite get the film to come together. Various creatives were involved over the years, as the project evolved from a completely solo film to a tie-in with the Amazing Spider-Man atrocities, and then back to a solo film, before becoming whatever this is. Big name creatives, such as Alex Kurtzman of recent Dark Universe infamy, were brought in to work on the film to no avail.

The film finally took flight after the Marvel Studios deal. Having officially made its way out of development hell is certainly a step in the right direction but it is also important to remember just how few stories of long-gestating films wrap with a happy ending.

More often than not, a film that has seen this many attempts and failures over the years carries that baggage with it into the final cut.
