8 Science Fiction Movies Ruined By Their Twists
2. Sunshine
Another film plagued by tonal insecurity, Sunshine acts as a gripping and tense science fiction movie up until about halfway through, where it devolves into slasher-horror campiness and loses the intrigue it had nurtured through an original concept and some slow-burn exploration.
When scientists realise the sun is dying, a mission is put in place to reignite it before times runs out for those on Earth. Whilst traversing space however, the crew stumble on a distress signal that reveals one crazed man left alive on the desolate vessel, who then decides to wipe out his rescuers one by one.
From a film that seemingly had so much to say, it's a shame to introduce such a one-dimensional villain with little more motivation than to get stabby. Of course, it's still Danny Boyle, so the film is arguably a beautiful one - and clearly comprises of some terrific direction and acting. It entirely depends on personal taste as to how upsetting the genre shift is, with some finding it effective, and some that want to smash up their DVDs and attack Boyle with the sharp bits for the deviation into slasher territory.
Maybe the film is more reflective on humanity than its given credit for...
