8 Terrible Comic Book Movie Performances By Great Actors
8. Nicolas Cage As Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider - Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance (2012)
There's not much to say about Nic Cage that the internet has meme-d already, and it's now basically a well established fact that he's batsh*t crazy. Prone to starring in films where the quality ranges from masterful (Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation) to absolutely absurd (The Wicker Man remake, Season of the Witch, most everything else), he's one of cinema's greatest actors for the sole reason that there's just nobody else like him. Even when he's bad he's great in an opposite sort of way, and you generally just can't take you eyes off him - a hallmark of any great actor. There's always a cut off point though, and with Cage it's here, in the sequel to Ghost Rider. Yes, he's just as bad in that film, but as it's the actor's first incarnation of the eponymous character it has to go down as one of those So Bad It's Good kinda deals (a recurring theme of this list as you'll see), a true crystallisation of Nic Cage being Nic Cage. Twice is too far though, and his second outing as the Ghost Rider amounts to nothing more than a scratchy reel of Nic Cage's worst attempts at being So Bad He's Good. The outcome is in fact pretty dull, and you get the sense that even Cage, despite reportedly being a huge fan of the comic (which begs the question: why he didn't try harder?), wishes he hadn't bothered donning that flaming leather again.
