9 Comic Book Movies That Almost Had Way Better Endings
4. Trevor Slattery Explodes - Iron Man 3
Everybody knows that what Marvel did to the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 was blasphemous: they turned a rich and interesting villain into the butt of a joke. Halfway through the film, we discovered that Ben Kingsley's incarnation of Iron Man's arch-nemesis was actually a drunken actor named Trevor Slattery. At the end, it's revealed that Guy Pearce - playing a generic bad guy named Aldrich Killian - was "the real Mandarin" all along. It was a questionable twist, and a dumb way to end the film. Unfortunately, an alternate ending to Iron Man 3 didn't correct this erroneous approach outright in giving fans the Mandarin they deserved, but it would have at least provided a cathartic moment of sorts in the wake of the beloved villain turning out to be just "a bloke from Croydon." Mainly because it involved Trevor Slattery being blown to smithereens. That's right: whilst the original ending to Iron Man 3 has Slattery being hauled off to jail, the film was at one time set to end with him injecting himself with the Extremis virus, only for it to cause him to explode. It might seem a bit silly, but Trevor - as a character - was such a slap in the face that the film really should've culminated on him being turned to mush.
