9 Problems A Jason Bourne Sequel Must Avoid

1. Now It's Time To Push Bourne In A New Directions

The overall argument here is that ultimately (ultimatumley!) the film is far too similar to what has come before. Jason Bourne should have turned left instead of going straight on. It was a great opportunity to change and adapt the franchise to suit the modern world, and perhaps even make a superior film in the process. Instead it is the same. The action is the same, the characters are the same, it is just exactly the same. The same!

Certainly the most irritatingly similar thing is the title character himself. Since the ending of Ultimatum the only thing that's changed is...actually nothing about him has really changed at all. He wears a hoodie at one point... don't think he's done that before. But, hooded attire aside, there is no development here and that is a great shame.

Several characters tell Bourne to his face that he is a natural born hero and patriot but we are never shown this. In fact throughout he is very much just out for himself, trying to solve yet another mystery from his past. He is even given an invitation to join a rebellious crew hatching a plan to expose CIA corruption and he... rejects it. Why? Giving him a cause has the potential to add a different flavour to the franchise but the story just bats it away to give us more of the same.

Bourne does not need to be made into the Captain America hero that he keeps being told he is, but he needs to emerge as something other than a capable badass chasing his tail. Hopefully the inevitable sequel will dare to be different.
