9 Sci-Fi Movie Sequels That Insulted Great Characters

The Indiana Jones series was all about action and adventure rather than any sniff of a sci-fi trope, but that all changed once it decided to bring aliens into the mix. Hence, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is totally fair game for this list.

Thanks to her role in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood is one of the most beloved characters in the Indiana Jones franchise.

When Marion turned up on our screens again in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, that appearance nearly tarnished the character for good. Gone was the feisty, hard-drinking, Nazi-slapping badass of Raiders, and instead audiences got a Marion who felt completely out of tune with the characteristics that had made her so popular in the first place.

Many will lament the many, many faults of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but there's a valid argument to be made that the movie's most baffling element was its handling of Marion Ravenwood.

While we all change over time - with Marion's Raiders and Crystal Skull appearances coming 27 years apart - seeing Marion depicted as a nagging mother who has zero purpose in the film, well that was a complete and utter disappointment that ruined a once-great character.

Sure, Marion's role in Crystal Skull was a way to introduce Shia LaBeouf's Mutt into the fold, but she could have been used so much better than what we ultimately got to see in that 2008 film.
