It's been a popular fan theory for quite some time now that M. Night Shyamalan's new superhero thriller is hiding one of his signature plot twists in plain sight.

Though the trailers have been focusing on Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) teaming up with Kevin Wendell Crumb aka The Horde (James McAvoy) to battle David Dunn (Bruce Willis), it's been speculated that the movie's real villain is in fact psychiatrist Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson).

The totally believable theory suggests that Staple is the ultimate supervillain, who is using her controversial methods to "cure" the three men to in fact leech their powers and become the most powerful superhuman on the planet.

It feels like exactly the sort of thing Shyamalan would do, and if the execution is right, it could totally work.

Given that the trailers have otherwise blatantly signposted the main narrative through-line, it's likely that audiences are being deceived about the movie's true nature. If not, doesn't it seem a little too simple for a Shyamalan film?
