9 Upcoming Movies That Could Be Franchise Killers
4. The Huntsman: Winter's War
Audiences came bounding out of cinemas in 2012 following screenings of Snow White And The Huntsman positively giddy with anticipation over the sequel and spin-off opportunities it might yield; that must be what Universal think anyway, because it feels like the world wasn’t really aching for more stories with those characters.
We’re getting one regardless, which is a prequel/sequel centring around Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman character, facing off against evil queens Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt. Snow White has been carefully written out of it, following the behind the scenes drama of the first movie, leaving us with the overwhelming charisma of The Huntsman to lead the story.
Maybe Winter’s War could have been promising at one stage when Frank Darabont was attached to direct, but when he left we all knew what it would be; a bunch of actors getting paid really well to stand around pretty looking sets, but with little in the way of an engaging plot. The film has stunk up international market and plans for any future Huntsman spin-offs are being kept quiet pending the film’s release in America.
