Annabelle: Creation Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
4. David F. Sandberg's Impressive Direction
Warner Bros. knew what they were doing when they hired David F. Sandberg to helm this movie, considering the immense success of his feature debut last year, Lights Out, which scored positive reviews from critics and made almost 30x its $5 million budget at the box office.
Sandberg's certainly a step up from the first movie's director, John R. Leonetti, the man previously responsible for the disaster that was Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, in any case.
Though Sandberg is certainly battling an uneven script at times, he makes the absolute best of it with intriguing camerawork that fully exploits dark spaces for all they're worth, and certainly gets the most out of his young cast too.
The film cements that Sandberg has quite a future in the industry if he continues to perform at this level, having already been hired by Warner Bros. to direct the upcoming DC Extended Universe superhero movie Shazam.
