It was a slap in the face when the 2010 film completely left Toph out of the movie, handing the role of earthbending teacher to a man. Toph may not have been in the first season of the show, but she quickly becomes a core member of the group for the rest of the series.

Aside from her teaching Aang how to earthbend, she's often the unbiased voice of reason. When Zuko grovels to the group and offers to help Aang, it's Toph who begs the rest of the group to consider it. Most of the time full of wit and sarcasm, she's the foil to the emotional and motherly Katara.

Toph may be blind, but she does not let her disability hinder her in any way. In fact, it makes her stronger than any other earthbender in the Four Nations. Toph invents metal bending, an element that was previously used to imprison earthbenders throughout the series.
