Although James "Rhodey" Rhodes isn't actually an Avenger, he is set to appear in an Avengers movie for the first time in Age of Ultron. In what capacity he is set to appear, nobody knows right now, but there's every chance that he could be a key figure in Ultron's demise. Imagine, if you will, that the Avengers' efforts are proving futile or that they've all been incapacitated. Rhodey is watching the events unfold on television or via surveillance cameras in some military shelter. He sees his good friend Tony Stark struggling and decides to do something about it - he dons the War Machine armour from the first two Iron Man movies and launches his own surprise assault on Ultron.
