Avengers: Endgame - 10 Huge Controversies Nobody Saw Coming
7. Ableist Runtime
Avengers: Endgame clocks in at a colossal 3 hours and one minute, making it 32 minutes longer than Infinity War. There’s some trade off that you don’t need to sit through the credits (except for the clanging of metal), but still; it’s a long haul.
You’d struggle to cut too much out of the movie (though someone does try to later on), but MTV still felt it was too long. Not because of any content or filler, but simply because a runtime that long was extremely ableist.
Their argument was that it’s unreasonable to expect people to hold their pee for that long, especially if they have health conditions.
However, disabled seats are often closest to the door, the runtime was heavily advertised and several websites uploaded toilet guides with the best downtimes if you needed to sneak out.
Adding to the controversy, disabled comedian Ricky Berwick called out Vilissa Thompson (who wrote the MTV article) for speaking for a community she knows nothing about. ‘Don’t speak for us,’ Berwick said in a YouTube video, ‘Don’t speak for the disabled community if you aren’t disabled. You know what, MTV? Go play some music...don’t come for us’.
