In case you were wondering, he “did not survive,” according to Joe Russo. Which, again, nobody was wondering about a great deal.

Still, how awful for him to survive Loki's self-aggrandising rule of Asgard and then Hela's decimation of the place and Surtur's destruction of it only to then see Thanos attack your refugee ship and kill half of your people AND then be killed when Thanos snapped his fingers. That's like a Shakespearean tragedy, right there.

Precisely none. It was a cameo (an amazing one, but a cameo all the same) and there was no way he was ever coming back.
