4. He Actually Did It

Despite how much Thanos' plan was set up in the marketing - not to mention in the comic Infinity War was at least partly based on - the very idea that he would ever manage to pull it off was pretty left-field.

After all, this is a Disney film in a franchise that had traditionally been resistant to killing anyone meaningful off over the previous 18 films (unless they were a villain, that is). Thanos clicking trillions out of existence would make this the biggest genocidal movie of all time and nobody could have reasonably claimed that they'd ever do it.

Sure, it will be undone in some way in Avengers 4 - especially as the survivors were basicaly all of the characters you'd expect to leave at the end of Phase 3 while the others will go onward - but watching them fade away was a stunning moment that few will ever forget.
