Batman V Superman: 5 Major Revelations From The Costume Designer

1. Batman's A Knuckle-Dusting Bad-Ass

With the Nolan Bat-flicks still firmly planted in popular consciousness, Wilkinson and Snyder had to find a way to make this incarnation their own:
"The batsuit is a complete 180 degree turn from the previous film incarnations €” our Batman€™s power comes from his incredible physical strength and fighting skills, not from armor. The director Zack Snyder wanted him to look as much like the comic book version as possible €” to be respectful to the original source."
Right from the get-go this Batman's suit has created the illusion of a hardened brawler, something closer in design to the hero of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns (there's that research again) than the stealthier, sleeked night-stalker Christian Bale and Chris Nolan cooked up in their cycle. He'll probably need the extra heft too; Bane might be a toughie, but Superman's a whole other level of physical specimen. Helping with that will be the brass knuckles installed in Batman's gloves. These alone indicate how one costuming decision can totally help redefine a character. Brass knuckles scream brutal street-warfare, which might be more this Batman's style - ditch the theatrics and just plug the bad guys senseless. I'm not sure they'll put a sufficient dent in Superman, but they certainly remove some of the performative polish seen in previous incarnations and infuse the re-design with a thuggish, non-poetic quality.
