Batman vs Superman Movie: 10 Choices For Recasting Commissioner Gordon

7. The Action Hero Commissioner: Karl Urban

Karl Urban The fact is that any fight between Superman and Batman is going to be pretty one-sided. Even given more experience as an older hero, and the prep time he needs to come up with all the Kryptonite rings, power suits and Bat-tanks possible to slow down the Kryptonian, Batman is still going to have the odds stacked against him. Even Frank Miller recognised that in The Dark Knight Returns, giving Batman a whole army of allies, up to and including an aged Green Arrow. It's probably asking too much for Ollie to be bought in, unless it's a cameo from TVs Arrow, but it would make sense for Batman to have at least one person on the ground ready to lend a hand should Superman start to take control of the battle. And if you're looking for an actor who can embody pre-established characters better than anyone, it's Karl Urban. He's surely now the go-to-guy for a role that requires someone with action and acting chops, especially in genre films where he's portrayed "Bones" McCoy, Eomer and Judge Dredd. It's the last one where we can see what he might bring to Jim Gordon. A strict adherence to the law, whatever the price, is common ground for both characters, and would continue the theme of Superman as the outsider, pitted against Gotham's police commissioner as well as Batman. It'd also make for some interesting interplay between the man who observes the law to the letter, and a guy who dresses up as a bat and runs around on roof tops punching the guilty and mentally ill.
