17. The Invite
Continuing her run as one of our boldest filmmakers working today, Olivia Wilde's third directorial effort The Invite is surely her best yet, a hysterical, dark, utterly gripping chamber piece about marriage, sex, and human behaviour.
The biting comedy-drama follows a couple trapped in a floundering marriage (Wilde and Seth Rogen) who invite their upstairs neighbours (Ed Norton and Penelope Cruz) to dinner, where their guests offer them an opportunity to reinvigorate their love lives.
Uncomfortable but shameless, The Invite stares down at a wide variety of taboo subjects - sex and desire, unconventional relationships, and identity outside of a long-lasting relationship - and injects them all with heaps of heart, humour, and often brutal relatability.
The results are frequently hilarious, sometimes profound, occasionally moving, and it finds its quartet of stars in some of their very best roles to date - particularly Rogen, who's never before appeared so vulnerable on screen.
