Best/Worst Case For 15 Summer Movies (With Predictions)
4. The Lion King
Release Date: July 19th
Have we decided whether or not this movie counts as live-action? In either case, The Lion King will take new form and will arrive in theaters mid-July. All the characters you remember will be back, voiced by an all-star cast. Time to revisit the most traumatizing fictional character death of our childhoods in IMAX and Real 3D.
Best Case: The teaser trailer for this movie was released on Thanksgiving Day and gained the second most views ever for a trailer in its first 24 hours. We all know what to expect from this movie and yet there is still a ton of excitement. Everyone buys into the nostalgia trip as The Lion King flirts with $2 billion at the worldwide box office and wins a boatload of awards for visual effects and music.
Worst Case: If this is a completely faithful remake of the animated film, what's the worst it can do here? It will be like the movie you love that you've seen a thousand times. It is a shot-for-shot remake of the animated original it has no chance of topping and will leave its audience with a feeling of diminished returns.
Prediction: This film has already scored two major wins: great visuals and a Donald Glover-Beyoncé duet for Can You Feel The Love Tonight. As for the movie itself , The Lion King will feel like a good cover of a great song: You will enjoy the experience, but you’ll just want the original once its over.
