Bond 25: 8 Potential Directors (And Where They Should Take The Series Next)

1. Danny Boyle

Danny Boyle: is there anything the man can't do? He's responsible for Trainspotting, an incredible portrayal of the Edinburgh drug scene; 28 Days Later, one of the best horror films released in the last twenty years; Sunshine, a mind-bending science-fiction horror; and Steve Jobs, a film that manages to remain enthralling despite relying on basically nothing but dialogue.

Slotting James Bond into his illustrious filmography wouldn't be all that jarring, would it? Time and time again Boyle has proven his dexterity when it comes to telling intimate narratives (127 Hours, for example) and crime-laden thrillers (Trance). Not only that, but Boyle is a very international film-maker: he manages to evoke the slums of India in Slumdog Millionaire, the scorching sun of a canyon in Moab, Utah in 127 Hours and the cold, infinite expanse of space in Sunshine. And that's just a few examples.

If Boyle was to helm Bond, then, it would be great to see him leave the cold, grey stones of England behind for somewhere infinitely more exotic. Back in the day, Bond was a huge globetrotter, whereas now he only really dips out of the country on brief excursions before returning. Boyle could give us a narrative like Live And Let A Die, a film which sees Bond lost in an unfamiliar setting amongst unfamiliar cultures. Transplanting Bond to a different country for the majority of the run time might also go a huge way to giving fans a unique villain to root against.
