5. Leet Speak
The 1990s Internet references don't end with the references to classic memes, there's also a reference for even more in-the-know old school Geocities users, courtesy of one of the developers.
One of the posters on the message board has left the somewhat confusing message "C4R0L D4NV3RS IS TH3 1337 Я0XX0ЯZ!!1", which looks like nonsense to modern users, no doubt. But it can be translated by anyone aware of Leet Speak, a system of language used initially by hackers back in the 80s that became popular in online communities into the 90s. Even if you don't think you're conscious of it, there's a chance you'll know at least one word borne out of it - n00b as it became a means to mock net newbies.
The message translates as "Captain Marvel is the elite rocks-er". In other words, "Captain Marvel rocks." Strongly. Calling her "leet" or elite in the oldest use of the word suggests she's on an entirely different level - as we've been told of the character repeatedly - as 1980s bulletin board system users with "elite" status were given access to file folders, games, and special chat rooms.
The reference is also double-loaded as the poster "Lori" is clearly the developer of the Captain Marvel website, Lori Lambert (who is also Marvel's Director of Software Engineering) and revealed the site is hosted on Angelfire on her Twitter:
