Comic Book vs Film: How Avengers: Infinity War Is Already Different
4. Thor's Hammer
In The Comics:
Thor actually loses Mjolnir part-way through the battle with Thanos when the villain transports it away from the battle to depower the Asgardian. But the hammer starts the story in Thor's possession.
It's not until Jason Aaron's Original Sin event that Thor was left without his hammer when he became unworthy to lift Mjolnir and then had to prove his worthiness in the aftermath in The Unworthy Thor run and getting a new weapon. In the comics, the thunder-axe Stormbreaker is given to him by Beta Ray Bill.
And none of this has anything to do with Infinity Gauntlet.
In The Film:
One of the Infinity War sub-plots sees Thor on the qust for a new weapon - which again proves to be Stormbreaker - with the help of Groot and Rocket Raccoon. They head to the homeworld of the dwarves, where they find the thunder-axe head.
Quite why the weapon is important in the fight with Thanos remains to be seen, but it must be for it to take time up in Infinity War.
