It's been known for a good while that AMC is working on a trilogy of Walking Dead movies set to star Andrew Lincoln as series protagonist Rick Grimes, but it was initially expected that these films would air directly on AMC itself.

However, the network confirmed more ambitious plans at Comic-Con, by dropping a CGI teaser trailer for the first film, while adding that it will actually be released in cinemas by Universal.

No word on a release date or other cast members yet, but the film will continue to follow Grimes' story after Lincoln left the show last year, with the series' chief content officer Scott Gimple set to pen the script.

Production is expected to start before the end of the year, though given that the season 9 finale was the least-watched in the series' history, it'll be interesting to see whether or not a theatrical release will actually translate to commercial success.
