In terms of the MCU's smaller, individual franchises, there aren't too many that have kept the same director throughout. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the Avengers franchises have all had multiple directors, and in 2021 Doctor Strange will join this list.

When it was first announced, Scott Derrickson was confirmed to be returning to the director's chair, but months later left the project due to 'creative differences'. While he is still attached as an executive producer, this has left the director's role wide open.

While fans were understandably concerned and skeptical when Derrickson left, particularly when he had so much success with the first movie in 2016, but these same fans were soon appeased when the rumour hit that none other than horror movie and gore enthusiast Sam Raimi would take up the vacant post.

The seasoned director, with his back catalogue boasting the likes of The Evil Dead and the entire Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, is perfectly suited to the task of bringing an element of real horror into the comic book world. Derrickson leaving really may be the blessing in disguise the franchise needed.
