Every Bond Girl Ranked - Worst To Best

8. Melina Havelock (For Your Eyes Only, 1981)

Bond fans had an inkling they were in for something a little different when it came to Bond Girls early on in 1981’s For Your Eyes Only, as heroine Melina Havelock is introduced staring down the camera with simmering rage after her parents are sprayed with bullets in front of her.

We’d heard of and seen Bond Girls committing acts of revenge before, but Melina was the first with a truly dangerous air about her. More than handy with a crossbow, Melina quickly establishes herself as an asset to Bond’s mission, feathering henchman Gonzales with a bolt and saving Bond early on. She's also completely at home as part of the squad of warriors storming villain Kristatos’ mountain lair at film’s end.

It’s her actions, not her words, that make her believable as part of a developing series of attempts to craft a heroine as Bond’s equal, a concept that the franchise only truly pulled off a few times.

Yet unlike other Bond Girls who veer too heavily towards one extreme of either bouncy and air headed or overly grim and dark, Melina frequently balances her vengeful nature with an appreciation for Roger Moore’s humour. She’s also fond of a drive in the country, helping Bond out with a well-placed getaway car in the form of an admittedly hideous yellow Citroën 2CV.

Best moment: Saving 007 again with another well-placed crossbow bolt at St. Cyril’s monastery.

Worst moment: With the mission complete, Melina whisks 007 away for a moonlight swim, leaving us at the mercy of a parrot squawking at a Margaret Thatcher lookalike in a truly silly moment.
