Walt Disney Animation Studios and Marvel Comics finally got together - kind of - for Big Hero 6, their 2014 release loosely based on Marvel's superhero team of the same name. It's one of their best looking animated movies to date, owing a debt to Japanese animation as much as Western comic books.

Big Hero 6 centres around the exploits of Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter), a robotics enthusiast who teams up with Baymax, an inflatable health service robot he inherits from his deceased brother. Baymax is a character with all the charm and appeal of other classic animated robots, not least Wall-E, with which Big Hero 6 invites favourable comparison.

While it doesn't break any new ground in terms of narrative (few Disney movies stray too far away from their familiar plot templates), Big Hero 6 is such slick and streamlined fun that it's easy to overlook the familiar plot and get swept up in the fast-paced action, particularly the awe-inspiring final act.
