Who would have thought The Rock could (kind of) sing? It's just one of many pleasant surprises in Moana, Disney's all singing, all dancing hit tale of a Polynesian girl (Auliʻi Cravalho) sent on an adventure to reunite a mysterious object with Maui, a demigod voiced by Dwayne Johnson.
The ocean itself is one of the stars of Moana - few animated movies have brought this immense body of water to life with such impressive fluidity. Moana's adventure upon these waves is one of the tightest yet produced by Disney, and her adventures with Maui is a perfectly paced blend of character development and action with a huge heart at the centre. Also notable are the beautifully animated sequences of Maui's tattoos, brought to life by veteran animator Eric Goldberg.
Widely acclaimed as a return to the grand heights of Disney's Renaissance, which is perhaps not surprising given that it was directed by long-serving Disney veterans Ron Clements and John Musker who were crucial in defining that era.
