Every Francis Ford Coppola Movie Ranked Worst To Best
22. Dementia 13 (1963)
Dementia 13 was Coppola's first big studio release, produced by Roger Corman after the release of two ill-formed sexploitation flicks. The film stars Launa Anders as a widow desperate to secure her late husband's inheritance, only for her convoluted plans of manipulation to fall through when she and her husband's family are attacked by an axe murderer.
Coppola was offered the chance to make the film after Corman found some left over funding from another project. Coppola made the film to fit Corman's requirements, which included making it as brutal and macabre as possible.
What the pair were left with was a tasteless travesty of a 60s horror film, overwrought with sinister violence and dire characters. The only good thing that came of it, in hindsight, was that it got Coppola's foot in the door.
