Every James Cameron Movie Ranked Worst To Best

5. Avatar (2009)

T2 Judgment Day
20th Century Studios

Cameron's last film before he returned with the long-awaited sequel over a decade later, Avatar was the director's greatest passion project, first dreamed up in the early 90s and put on the backburner because he wanted the technology to catch up with his vision.

Noted with popularising 3D movies whilst smashing every box office record there was, Avatar has obvious issues, from its derivative and predictable white saviour narrative to its mostly weak characters (barring Zoe SaldaƱa's scene-stealing warrior Neytiri), but it makes up for these flaws with thrilling action and touching intimacy.

Ultimately a love story wrapped in a tale of colonialism and war, Avatar is beautiful and action-packed, romantic and exciting, and whilst it trips itself up with its length and predictability, it's hard not to be taken in by Cameron's vision. It'll always be a divisive film, but Pandora will always endure.
