After the utter sh*tshow that was 2020, 2021 needed to deliver for Marvel Studios. Fans had gone for too long without any new MCU content, and were positively chomping at the bit for more. The franchise simply couldn’t afford to let its fans down.

The only plus to come from nothing releasing in 2020 is that 2021 was STACKED. For the first time ever, there were four movies released in a calendar year, though these were a mixed bag at best. Black Widow was thoroughly underwhelming, and though Eternals didn’t deserve the hate it received from critics, it failed to live up to expectations.

At the other end of this spectrum however, there was the incredible Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, easily one of the greatest origin stories the MCU has ever produced, and of course, Spider-Man: No Way Home, arguably one of the biggest, most ambitious, and best offerings the MCU has ever put forth.

What puts 2021 over the edge however, didn’t come in the cinemas, it was the franchise’s foray into the world of Disney+ on the small screen. While this was also hit and miss, with Falcon and the Winter Soldier and What If…? failing to set the world alight, the absolute home runs that were WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye more than made up for it. From weird and wonderful, to new fan favourites and future big players in the MCU, fans were treated to just about everything this year.
