Fantastic Beasts: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best
1. Kowalski
It was always an oversight in the Harry Potter books and films that the magical community's relatonship with the Muggle world was underplayed so much. It was hinted at here and there, but it would have been nice to see some sort of cross-pollination (not least because there was always the question of magical characters having Muggle friends at home).
In Fantastic Beasts that itch is well and truly scratched with the lovingly crafted, never victimising portrayal of "everyman" figure Kowalski. He's basically this franchise's version of Boo from Monsters Inc - unwittingly thrust into a world not his and the focus of panic as a result.
And rather ingeniously, he's also the personification of an old desire among all Wizarding World fans - he's not only our way into the plot, he also offers a sympathetic vision of our fears that we'll never be magical realised. That's exactly why the tragedy of him having to return to his old life is so pronounced, and why the return of Queenie and his knowing smile at the end are so beautifully poignant.
Let's just hope they find a way to bring him back.
