There's a very conscious attempt, right from the get-go to reclaim and reuse some of the bilious rage that met with the first announcements of the all-female reboot.

At various periods during the film characters actually refer to Youtube comments on the videos of ghostly events that they upload, which are thinly veiled, tongue-in-cheek approximations of some of the typical comments that flooded the net in real life.

Given the fact that those Youtube sequences must have been included before the controversy of the first trailer becoming the site's most downvoted video ever, they offer chilling foresight into the capacity for trolls to ruin everything.
