How Avengers: Endgame Delivered A Satisfying Ending (But Game Of Thrones Failed)
1. Deaths Had A Real Emotional Impact
How Endgame Delivered: It wasn't an absolute bloodbath (on the hero side of things, anyway), but Endgame had two major deaths that were more shocking and impactful that any death in Game of Thrones' final season.
Natasha Romanoff's death may be a little undermined by the fact she has a movie coming (which is definitely a prequel) but it was a fitting end for the character. She had red in her ledger that she wanted to wipe out, and she was finally able to do that by saving the universe when she sacrificed herself for the soul stone. It was even more heartbreaking because of how it personally affected Clint, who tried to make the sacrifice but Natasha stopped him so he could see his family again.
Tony Stark's death hit even harder. He was the very first hero we met in the MCU, the character who we've followed the longest. The Infinity Saga started with Tony Stark telling the world "I am Iron Man", and it ended with him saying those exact same words before snapping his fingers and wiping out Thanos and his army, costing him his life. It was a tragic, but satisfying end for the character, and if you didn't shed a tear, you're clearly not human.
How Thrones Failed: Season 8 did deliver some heartbreaking deaths - like Lyanna Mormont, Jorah and Theon in the Battle of Winterfell - but it absolutely failed its three biggest deaths: Jaime, Cersei and Daenerys.
The fact that Jaime and Cersei died embracing each other was wrong. It was the final nail in the coffin of Jaime's failed redemption arc, and Cersei was deserving of a far better (or rather, worse) death than being crushed by a falling building. Even if she was abruptly burned alive by Daenerys, it would have been a more fitting death than this.
Daenerys's death lacked as much impact as it could have because of how rushed her transformation was. If more time was spent exploring her storyline and turn to evil, her downfall would have been more tragic, but her death underwhelmed because "oh look, she's evil now and we only have one episode left so she has to die like right now".
You know what's frightening? You said farewell to characters you loved. Characters you thought you cared for. And you felt nothing. Just impatient to get on with it.
