The 2011 addition of the Hugo Awards were announced over the weekend, celebrating almost sixty years of recognizing 'the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year' since it's inception in 1955. The awards are mostly given out for works in print (comics & novels mostly) but there is one award for film and one award for t.v. which this year were given to Chris Nolan's cerebral blockbuster Inception (Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form) and Dr. Who episodes The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang (Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form€™... a t.v. award despite the episodes combined going longer than Inception!), respectively. According to the final ballot, here's how the film awards brokedown;
Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form (1755 ballots) 1st Place Inception (WINNER) 734 738 795 884 How to Train Your Dragon 390 394 439 507 Harry Potter 201 202 239 268 Scott Pilgrim 193 193 212 Toy Story 3 182 182 No Award 55 2nd Place How to Train Your Dragon 552 556 657 839 Harry Potter 360 365 455 585 Scott Pilgrim 336 337 405 Toy Story 3 329 330 No Award 79 3rd Place Harry Potter 528 533 699 Toy Story 3 483 485 653 Scott Pilgrim 452 454 No Award 93 4th Place Toy Story 3 713 Scott Pilgrim 566 No Award 123 5th Place Scott Pilgrim 933 No Award 192 No Award Tests € 1358 ballots ranked Inception greater than No Award; 106 ballots ranked No Award greater than Inception - PASS € ((1755 €“ 55) / 2100) * 100 = 81% - PASS
When How To Train Your Dragon, Toy Story and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World are counted in the science fiction film category, you know it's been a terrible year for the genre as none of those are really science fiction... and the others aren't really fantasy in the way I would categorize fantasy. The rest of the Hugo Award winners are listed HERE.
