Joseph Gordon-Levitt: 5 Awesome Roles And 5 That Sucked

3. Neil - Mysterious Skin

This was the role that marked a turning point for Levitt€™s career, where people stopped seeing him as the kid from 3rd Rock From The Sun and started to take him seriously. In Mysterious Skin he plays a man who was abused as a child, and the film looks at the emotional fallout this has on him later in life. There€™s no getting around the fact that Mysterious Skin is a difficult watch €“ and deals with some really uncomfortable subject matter €“ but Levitt€™s performance is so heartbreaking and committed that it's worth the effort. The movie came at a time in his career just after he made a commitment to €œonly making good movies€; which meant that he didn€™t work much. After his fearless performance here - where he does scenes that would scare most actors away - he€™s worked almost non-stop ever since.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
