15. The Lens Flare

It's 2017, it's beyond the time when lens flare should have been outdated. Particularly as JJ Abrams catches a lot of heat for his apparent fascination with using it to make his films unwatchable.

Clearly delighted with the increased effects budget, Vogt-Roberts immediately spunked an unnecessarily large chunk of it on adding as much lens flare to the first half of the movie as humanly possible. If there's a metallic or shiny surface, you bet your sweet ass it's going to reflect light and stop you seeing properly.

Hell, at several points there's nothing to even reflect off, which is perhaps why the director keeps cutting to a low lying sun in the middle of the day to pretend filming conditions were tricky and flare unavoidable.
