At one point during the scene set around the mouth of the opening to the hollow section under the island where the Skull Crawlers emerge, one of the soldiers mounts his M2 machine gun on the top of a giant Triceratops skull.
Though the film doesn't include live dinosaurs, their former presence on the island is clearly a nod to their historical importance to the franchise's history. Indeed, the 1933 original King Kong featured a battle between Kong and three Trices.
The skull also feels like a symbolic decision to underline this iteration's decision to consciously move away from dinosaurs as Kong's enemies. They're quite literally dead as an idea.
