Martin Freeman: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Men Only (2001)

There's a bit in Family Guy where Peter Griffin is watching Philadelphia for the first time and comments "Tom Hanks. That's the guy. Tom Hanks. Everything he says is funny", and that always reminds me of this - the moment you realise an actor is much more than just able to play comedy. Men Only was a once shown, never repeated (or released on DVD) Channel 4 drama about a bunch of reprehensible lads, and the depravity they rapidly sink into. Their five-a-side matches result in the drinking sessions, which lead to strippers, then to drugs and prostitutes, and finally a vicious gang attack on one unsuspecting girl. As Jamie, Freeman manages to perfectly capture a young man who allows himself to become part of a gang, and the reprehensible consequences that bring. An incredibly tough watch, and by no means a perfect drama as some of the characters feel like cartoons, but Jamie's remarkable disintegration and attempt to make up for what he's been involved in still stands out nearly a decade after it was made.

I'm a Westcountry exile now living in Yorkshire with lovely wife and cats (also lovely). I'm a big fan of films, robots, timetravel, and films about timetravelling robots, as well as lots of other action, sci-fi and comedy. I'm currently trying to write a sitcom that doesn't involve robots, and I also blog nonsense on timolsky.blogspot.com. Thanks for taking the time to read my stuff, and feel free to comment.
