The (re)introduction of alternate timelines and variants in Loki gave the show’s creative team an opportunity to explore how different characters would look in unfamiliar timelines. This was especially true for Sylvie Laufeydottir, Loki’s equally intriguing and more competent counterpart.

The character was brought to life by Sophia DiMartino, who brilliantly captured the character’s complexities and nuances. First introduced as the series’ primary antagonist, Sylvie was considered extremely dangerous by the TVA due to her systematic takedown of its agents and her unrestrained timehopping.

Her reputation is backed up by her effortlessly matching Loki in wits and skill, keeping the God of Mischief on his toes. It was later revealed that she was subject to be erased from the timeline as a child and spent her life escaping the time agency by moving through the timestream itself. This reveal made her desire for vengeance more sympathetic, and highlighted the TVA’s callous disregard for life.

Her killing of the TVA head He Who Remains was a rash decision that led to the rise of Kang the Conqueror, and while this did not sit right with some fans, it made sense due to her tragic life courtesy of the TVA’s careless machinations.
