3. The Skrulls

During the build-up to 2012's The Avengers, images of the alien invaders that the titular team would have to fight off started to emerge online. All kinds of rumours about what species they were began to do the rounds - and it was the Skrulls that most people assumed they would turn out to be. Of course, that didn't happen and it was the Chitauri who actually faced off against Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow and Hawkeye - not least because the rights to the Skrulls weren't under Marvel Studios' control, because they fell under the Fantastic Four banner and, as such, were owned by Fox in terms of movie rights. In the event of the Fantastic Four and their supporting characters going over to Marvel Studios, the Skrulls could indeed invade the MCU. This would open the door to classic story arcs like the Kree-Skrull War, Annihilation and Secret Invasion. How good would that be?!
