While some Marvel movies have been found lacking when it comes to plot or villains, they do normally succeed with their heroic character work, crafting interesting characters you want to watch and root for.

That's never more evident than Guardians of the Galaxy, which works as a brilliant origin story for the team and does an incredible job in defining each character independently and within the group.

The interplay between each of them, from the initial rivalry to the way they become like a real family, is superb and the core strength of the movie, with the cast all enjoying a wonderful chemistry that really sells it. There are numerous reasons Guardians could've failed, but this team and the performances of its cast are the biggest reason it works so well, and it remains a level of character dynamics few MCU movies can match.
