Having a female director can be key for this kind of project. It goes without saying that women understand the female experience better than men, so it’s great to have Australian director Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) on board to bring Natasha’s story to life.

The screenplay is written by female screenwriter Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle) with Ned Benson (The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) called in for touch ups. Schaeffer reportedly wanted to work closely on the story with Johansson which is also a good sign.

Black Widow will also be the first Marvel film directed solely by a woman, as Captain Marvel was directed by filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
