Michael Bay – Ranking His Films From Worst To Best

1. The Rock

The Rock is regularly held up to Bay€™s critics as proof he€™s capable of making a great movie, and it€™s a hard argument to deny. The film has all the signature Bay-isms people know and love while also featuring excellent performances and €“ for a change €“ a solid script, which had writers like Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino chipping in lines of dialogue. Sean Connery and Nic Cage make for a great €“ if unusual €“ buddy cop team-up, and they both have a fun time with the juicy dialogue they're given. Ed Harris makes for a surprisingly complex villain, and the film might be one of the only times that audiences actually cared about the characters in a Bay movie. Bay€™s talent for mayhem (or is that Bayhem?) gives people all the action they could ever need, with the ambush of the SEAL team and the Hummer chase through San Francisco being the standout setpieces. Bay has yet to make another film that holds together the way The Rock does, but while he's still around there's always a chance he'll recapture the magic he showed here. Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
