With the release of the Mortal Kombat movie trailer, fans have rejoiced at its faithful recreation of several of their favourite fatality-inducing characters.

The costumes, the surroundings, the lore... oh, and the fighting and bloodshed. It appears as though MK is back on the big screen with a fiery vengeance.

The series has long been known for its wide array of colourful characters, ranging from flaming skeletons that could take Johnny Blaze down, to Special Forces soldiers endowed with metal limbs and sorcerers, all the way to ancient dragon kings. Having run for over twenty years, there's little doubt every kombatant has at least one dedicated fan.

But maybe there was a character that was missed by fans in the trailer, or maybe there's uncertainty over whether a certain person will appear. If that's the case, worry not, as with a bit of frame-by-frame scouring, we can get an accurate read on which characters are confirmed so far.

Let's go through every bloodletting brute that is known to appear in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie.

15. Sub-Zero

Scorpion's icy nemesis is prominent in the trailer, as is their rivalry. A member of the famous Lin Kuei clan, Sub-Zero is most well known as the freeze-inducing enemy of the Shirai Ryu assassin.

He's usually on the side of the good guys, which makes his appearance in the trailer far more fascinating. Sub-Zero seems to be more villainous than usual, even appearing alongside Shang Tsung in one scene.

In MK lore, the original Sub-Zero was a man called Bi Han, who was a ruthless Lin Kuei combatant allegedly responsible for the murder of Scorpion's family and clan. In a confrontation, Bi Han killed Scorpion; not long after resurrection, Scorpion exacted his revenge against Bi Han before it was discovered he had nothing to do with the Shirai Ryu demise.

As a result, Scorpion devoted his life to the protection of Bi Han's brother, Kuai Liang, who took up the Sub-Zero mantle. Liang is more of a good guy than Bi Han, but retains his icy abilities.
