Anyone who's seen Flying Lotus' insane debut Kuso shouldn't be hugely surprised that many were likely left wary of his follow-up Ash.
Yet this gonzo sci-fi horror film is considerably more accessible than the filmmaker's previous effort, given that it's an incredibly obvious homage to classic horror films like Alien, The Thing, and Event Horizon.
Eiza González stars as Riya Ortiz, an astronaut who wakes up on a space station on a strange planet with her fellow crew members dead, only to be approached by a mysterious man (Aaron Paul) who may or may not be there to rescue her.
Though no points are awarded for guessing the particulars of the plot, Ash is one of the most visually mesmerising horror films of the last few years - an acid-splashed fever dream of a movie that's an absolute treat to drink in even if the story is paper-thin at best.
But González's gutsy Final Girl performance keeps the film compelling even when we know where it's all going.
