5. The Tower of Babel
In Case You Missed Sunday SchoolA parable of hubris, as well as an etiology, or a "just so" story, explaining why different languages exist. Mankind seeks to be the equal of God, so the united people of Earth build a tower to reach Heaven. But God comes down and confuses their speech so that they cannot cooperate, and humanity scatters across the world.
Why It Should Be a MovieThis story only takes up eight verses, but this one section makes it prime material for something great: "The Lord said, 'If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.'" (Genesis 11:6-7) Did you catch that?
God is threatened by humans, and thus divides them. The implicit message is that, if we can simply put our differences aside, we can do literally anything. Imagine a world where people can work together perfectly. When you realize the full implications of that, you can construct an alternate society that can be used as a vehicle for satirizing people's pettiness and foibles. And there's a possible angle for sending a message about how religion can divide us, as well.
