Oscars 2014: 18 Sublime Moments That Define Best Picture Nominees

12. Shake His Hand - Dallas Buyers Club

While Ron's diagnosis of AIDS, initial stage of denial, and homophobia allow for Matthew McConaughey to deliver some impactful scenes, it's his overarching character development that really make the performance stand out, and feel worthy of a Best Actor nomination. And one of those pivotal moments is the supermarket scene, where he comes across an old friend that has ostracized him ever since being diagnosed with AIDS. For whatever reason, TJ is under the impression that it is all water under the bridge, and utters some pretty homophobic stuff that can't be repeated here. What he didn't realize is that Ron is shopping with his new transvestite business partner and friend Rayon - in an equally brilliant performance by Jared Leto - whom enters the scene upon hearing the derogatory remark. This prompts Ron to grab TJ from behind in a choke-hold, demanding that he shakes Rayon's hand, which would be a sign of humiliation for someone so far out there in their homophobic beliefs. Matthew McConaughey's anger, Jared Leto's look of confusion, and Kevin Rankin's look of utter disgust all play off of each other to make the scene stand out amongst the best of 2013.
