Oscars 2016 Nominations: 15 Insane Shocks & Snubs

4. Shock: Ex Machina For Best Visual Effects

Many believed that the fifth spot in the Best Visual Effects category would go to Avengers: Age of Ultron, but in a surprise turn it in fact went to $15 million sci-fi thriller Ex Machina. Though Age of Ultron featured a crapton of CGI in almost every frame, Ex Machina utilised it with more subtlety and grace, which explains how it ended up in the five: surely the branch gets fed up of nominating movies soaked in just-decent CGI simply because this category rarely has more than one or two standouts.
