Oscars 2021: Predicting Winners In EVERY Category
3. Best Actress: Frances McDormand
Frances McDormand could go down in history as the only person to win Best Actress three times (only behind Katharine Hepburn who has won the accolade on four separate occasions) if she wins for her performance in Nomadland.
Having established herself as a police officer in Fargo and a grieving mother in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri her latest role of a working class woman travelling the country looking for a job in Nomadland looks likely to secure McDormand a third win. With its focus on the struggle of the working class after the Great Recession this film from writer/director Chloé Zhao is set to sweep up many of the big awards come Oscar night.
In what looks likely to be a strong year for Best Actress nominees, McDormand may be battling Malcolm & Marie's Zendaya and Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman. However, similar to Minari incorrectly being labelled an international film at the Golden Globes, another contentious mishap haunts this category...
Viola Davis is being considered for 'Best Actress' around the awards circuit for her titular role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom despite only being in 26 minutes of the film. While she is the main actress in the film this raises a debate about how she can compete with her fellow competitors who have a whole film to develop their character while she only has one third of the runtime of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom to shine. Considering that she had previously won Best Supporting Actress and that the competition is lower in this category it would surely have made sense to enter Davis in this category instead.
