Oscars 2022: All 20 Actors Who Could Get Their First Oscar Nomination
16. Tessa Thompson - Passing
Ever since Rebecca Hall's directorial debut Passing premiered at Sundance, lead actresses Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga have received plentiful critical praise for their work as mixed-race women living on opposite sides of racial lines in 1930s America.
It's Thompson who, as the lead, is far more likely to end up on the nominees' slate, and though her more subdued work will need to fight tooth and nail for recognition among more volcanic Best Actress possibilities, don't count against her yet.
Working massively in her favour will be the film's Netflix release, ensuring Oscar voters don't have any excuses not to watch it with a few quick button presses.
Thompson's definitely more of a fringe candidate, but never forget the manner in which a potential nominee's momentum can violently swing before the voting window closes.
